New or used tires: which should you buy?

Used tires make sense when you need a tire today on a budget, want to match one worn tire, or don't plan to keep the car long. New tires are worth it when you'll keep the car for years, drive a lot of highway miles, or want the full tread and the maker's warranty. We sell both, so we'll tell you which fits.

When used is the smart buy

  • You had a blowout and need a tire today
  • You're matching one tire to a partly worn one on the same axle
  • You're selling the car soon or it's a second car
  • Your size is expensive new, like 20 inch and up

When new is worth the money

  • You'll keep the car for years
  • You drive a lot of highway miles
  • You want all four matching, with full tread
  • You want a manufacturer's warranty. Ask about the one on the tire you pick

Can you mix new and used?

Yes, if you keep each axle matched. The two tires on the front should be the same size and close in tread, and the same goes for the back. If you're putting a new pair on with a used pair, ask us which axle they should go on for your car.

What each costs at our shop

Used tires run $40 to $45 for 15 inch up to $80 to $90 for 22 inch, plus $25 to $60 per tire to mount and balance. For new, we carry or can get Goodyear, Firestone, BFGoodrich, Michelin, Pirelli, Toyo and most top brands, and we're an authorized Atturo dealer. Call with your size and budget and we'll give you options on both.

Questions

Are used tires worth it?
A good used tire with plenty of tread, no damage and a recent date code is real savings. A cheap one that fails those checks isn't a deal.
Which lasts longer, new or used?
A new tire starts with full tread, so it lasts longer. How long a used tire lasts depends on how much tread is left, so ask us to show you before it goes on.
